What are the benefits to homebirth?

Having a Homebirth reduces:  the risk of infection, risks from unnecessary interventions, maternal morbidity rates from complications and interventions, risks from errors in hospitals, interference in bonding and breastfeeding from hospital policies, risks from poor staffing levels in hospitals

Homebirth provides:  safe, familiar and private surrounds for labor and birth, woman-centered care during pregnancy, labor and birth, family-oriented birth with no strangers present, an opportunity for immediate bonding and breastfeeding, less disruption and stress for the whole family, affirmation that birth is a normal and profound life event  (Citizens for Midwifery).

Is it legal? As a citizen, you are entitled to have your baby anywhere you want to, with whomever you choose to attend you.  You are even entitled to give birth all alone if that is your desire.  According to MANA (Midwives Alliance of North America) midwifery is neither illegal nor regulated in the State of Ohio.  That means you may choose a credentialed midwife (CPM) or a direct entry Community/Traditional midwife.  Be sure to ask your potential midwife about her training/experience.

Having a monitrice or a doula for a hospital birth, will empower a woman and her family during the birth process to achieve the birth experience she desires and deserves. She can help you by honoring the process of birth and assisting God's natural design of labor and birth. Our bodies know what to do to birth a baby!  She can help you to know what questions to ask, and to be sure you understand your physician's explanations.  She cannot speak for you, only remind you of what your plans are/were.

Having a doula can reduce the need for inductions, epidurals, analgesia use, forceps and vacuum assisted delivery, and Cesarean sections.
