Why a doula?

Doulas reduce the need for interventions.

According to the Doula Book, by Marshall H. Klaus, M.D., John H. Kennell, M.D., and Phyllis H. Klaus, C.S.W., M.F.T. The authors completed an analysis that drew together ten randomized trials of continuous doula support with a technique known as meta-analysis. When the results of these studies are calculated together, the presence of a doula:

  • Reduces the overall cesarean rate by roughly 45 %
  • Reduces the length of labor by 25 %
  • Reduces oxytocin use by 50%
  • Reduces the need for pain medication by 31%
  • Reduces the need for forceps delivery by 34%
  • Reduces requests for epidurals by 10-60%

The overall conclusion is that having doula support enhances the well-being of mothers and babies, leads to fewer medical interventions in the process of labor and delivery, and saves money.

“If a Doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use one.”
